Gingrich’s private ventures are going bankrupt

In financial terms, it costs taxpayers about $40,000 a day to pay for Mr. Gingrich’s Secret Service detail. His campaign was $4.3 million in debt as of the end of March, according to filings. There is also the intangible cost to Mr. Gingrich’s stature and the threat to party unity behind the inevitable nominee, Mitt Romney — whom, Mr. Gingrich says, he will support and campaign for.

Mr. Gingrich seems not to care in the least about the stature and party unity thing.

Gingrich Unloads on FOX News in Private Meeting

During a meeting with 18 Delaware Tea Party leaders here on Wednesday, Newt Gingrich lambasted FOX News Channel, accusing the cable network of having been in the tank for Mitt Romney from the beginning of the Republican presidential fight. An employee himself of the news outlet as recently as last year, he also cited former colleagues for attacking him out of what he characterized as personal jealousy.

“I think FOX has been for Romney all the way through,” Gingrich said during the private meeting — to which RealClearPolitics was granted access — at Wesley College. “In our experience, Callista and I both believe CNN is less biased than FOX this year. We are more likely to get neutral coverage out of CNN than we are of FOX, and we’re more likely to get distortion out of FOX. That’s just a fact.”

Newt “I was perfectly fine with Fox’s right-wing bias until it went against me” Gingrich, ladies and gentlemen!

While vowing to stay in the race until the Republican convention, Newt Gingrich admitted Tuesday morning that his campaign “money is very tight” and they are going to have to run a tight ship…

The Gingrich campaign also began charging attendees at public events $50 to take a picture with the speaker — something that only happened at fundraisers in the past.

Gingrich acknowledges campaign cash is ‘tight’

Newt Gingrich has lost his last embedded print reporters, reporters on the trail confirm.

The last two print reporters covering Gingrich full-time on the trail — from POLITICO and the Atlanta Journal Constitution — pulled out on Friday. The Associated Press pulled its embed after Tuesday’s Illinois primary.

These and other print outlets will continue to cover Gingrich on occasion, but the sustained traveling press has been reduced to the television networks, which will remain.

On the bright side, he’s still faring better than Ron Paul.

It makes sense. The race is really between the various and sundry versions of Mitt Romney, versions that are updated daily.

Is the Gingrich campaign finally over?
“With more than 130 delegates (although all GOP delegate calculations are murky), Gingrich would, in theory, have a role at a contested Republican Convention. Morley Winograd, an architect of the Democratic Party’s arcane delegate rules and a veteran of the contested Kennedy vs. Carter 1980 Convention, suggested in an insightful column in Politico that Santorum and Gingrich should join forces in a last-ditch stop-Romney coalition. With almost all future GOP primaries winner-take-all by congressional district, Winograd theorized that the anti-Mitt candidates could divvy up the districts based on their comparative strength against Romney. There’s only one problem: It is hard to identify a spot on the remaining primary map where Gingrich would be a stronger challenger than Santorum.”

Those comments are reprehensible,” Plouffe said of Gingrich’s response. “And, you know, Speaker Gingrich is clearly in the last throes of his political career… [Y]ou can make a decision whether to go out with some shred of dignity or say these irresponsible, reckless things, and he’s clearly chosen the latter path, and that’s unfortunate for the country.

Newt Gingrich’s Trayvon Martin Comments Were ‘Reprehensible,’ David Plouffe Says

Dear Newt: When you’re more appalled at President Obama’s words of comfort to the Martin family than you are the death of their son, you need to look at your life and your choices.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) on Sunday criticized Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich for suggesting the U.S. might need to accelerate its withdrawal from Afghanistan and said his fellow GOP contenders should listen to the advice of military brass on the war…

In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Graham said Gingrich’s assessment was wrong. “I shot that [down] very hard,” said Graham.

“I like Newt, he’s a smart guy, but listen to the general,” Graham continued. “What we don’t need is a bunch of politicians trying to create a military exit strategy. We’re withdrawing from Afghanistan, the question is how? Do we listen to General Allen or do we listen to politicians who are trying to get a sound bite.”

Graham: Don’t need GOP candidates creating their own Afghan ‘exit strategy’

A new Pew Research poll looks a “quick, off-the-cuff public impressions” of the GOP presidential candidates.

For Mitt Romney, the overall number of people citing money or wealth has soared since late last year, with mentions of his religion way down. His top five in the new poll are “no,” “rich,” “good,” “Mormon” and “moderate.”

The top five for Rick Santorum: “conservative,” “no,” “good,” “OK,” and “crazy.”

For Newt Gingrich: “old,” “no,” “idiot,” “untrustworthy” and “dislike.”
