A mass of flowers covered Davis’ closed casket. Two photos flanked it — one a color portrait of a young boy who grew up on the streets of Savannah’s Cloverdale neighborhood and the other a black and white photo of a young man in a suit attending his murder trial.
Those in attendance repeatedly chanted: “I am Troy Davis,” the slogan adopted in the campaign to spare his life and one that went viral on social media networks.

…Ross Douthat has perpetrated another atrocity. It takes a brave man to say that we’re doing people a favor by executing them, but Ross Douthat is that man. It is, quite possibly, the laziest argument I have ever heard in my life, and I read Megan McArdle every day.
Douthat is a graduate of a prep school and Harvard. He is the youngest ever op-ed columnist for the New York Times. He undoubtedly is paid six figures for his work. Yet the best he can come up with about the religious and political issue of capital punishment is an essay that would be failed by a high school teacher.
Douthat says that by holding executions we shine a spotlight on the criminal justice system and bad prison conditions and therefore holding executions is a good thing, even if we accidentally-on-purpose execute an innocent man. The argument seems to rest on his belief that it’s perfectly okay to kill criminals, or innocent guys as long as they have already been born.

In Slate, Dahlia Lithwick asks, “Will the Troy Davis case be the one that finally turns America against the death penalty?” and she concludes with the “faint hope” that it might. Here’s the actual answer: oh, fuck no. See, we are a bloodthirsty nation that actually prides itself in being bloodthirsty. America exists now in a perpetual state of arrested development, stuck in a savage teenagehood: narcissistic, emotional, easily roused to uncontrollable bursts of violence, and filled with hate towards anyone who thinks differently. Just as we can be at war (do you remember that? We’re at war still. Surprising, no?) with few visible consequences to the vast majority of Americans, we just don’t give a fuck if a couple of innocent dudes are offed, as long as it’s not our innocent family members and as long as we can keep offing the presumptively guilty ones, and don’t even bother with trying to say that offing people is fucked up.
